South Florida Garage Door Storm Safety Guide

A garage door is a large exterior opening, and storm preparation should happen before severe weather is close. Property owners can document condition and spot visible concerns, but structural changes, spring work, and wind-load decisions require a qualified on-site assessment.

Prepare Before Storm Watches and Warnings

Operate the door early enough to notice new noise, uneven travel, delayed closing, damaged seals, loose visible parts, or an opener that reverses. Last-minute testing during severe weather leaves less time to address a problem safely.

Confirm the door closes fully and the area around the opening drains as intended. Move stored items away from the door and keep vehicles positioned so the garage can remain closed when weather arrives.

Know What System Is Installed

Do not assume a door is wind-rated because it looks reinforced. Product labels, installation records, permits, bracing systems, and manufacturer instructions are better sources for identifying what is installed and how it should be prepared.

Do not add improvised braces, drill panels, or alter tracks without a system-specific plan. An incorrect modification can damage the door or interfere with normal movement.

Plan for Power Loss

Know where the opener emergency release is located, but do not pull it while the door is open, unstable, or supported by damaged hardware. Disconnecting an unbalanced door can allow it to move suddenly.

Battery backup availability and operation depend on the opener model. Review the manufacturer instructions before storm season and replace batteries only with compatible parts.

What to Check After Severe Weather

Before operating the door, look from a safe position for bent tracks, displaced rollers, loose sections, water near electrical components, broken glass, damaged cables, or a door that is no longer level.

Do not force the opener against a blocked or damaged door. Photograph visible conditions, keep the area clear, and arrange an assessment if movement or structure has changed.

Information That Helps With a Post-Storm Estimate

  • The property address and whether access is currently blocked.
  • Photos taken from a safe distance showing the full door and visible damage.
  • The opener brand and any model information that is safely visible.
  • Whether the door moved after the storm and what sound or motion occurred.
  • Any product, permit, or installation records available for the existing door.
